As part of your personalized winter tour join us for an interpretive introduction to the largest woodland winter in the Northwest. This wonderful garden sanctuary is situated on a treed slope through which paths wander and in which over 500 different plants, shrubs and trees selected for winter interest are planted. It provides a sense of tranquility, especially from December through April, when early fragrant blossoms and vividly coloured bark and berries are stunning.

Takata Garden

The ever evolving Takata Japanese Garden and Zen Garden was designed and established by volunteers to honour the Takata Tea Garden, which existed in Victoria from 1907 to the 1930’s. This garden, under tall native conifers, features plantings on either side of a stream that runs between two large ponds. You can cross over the stream by arched, zigzag and rock bridges as you progress to the Zen Garden.

Woodland Paths - The chartreuse blooms of hellebore argutifolius (Corsican hellebore) combine with snowdrops and the mauve blooms of dwarf early rhododendrons.	Spring marginal plantings - Walking further down the stream in spring you will over look the astilbe and iris, which have been blended together with the candelabra primulas, hostas, ornamental grasses, ferns, mosses and other shade loving perennials to form a restful tableau.	Serenity is evoked by a simple clump of native white erythroniums on a carpet of moss.	Marginal plantings of ferns are joined in spring by irises.
Stipa arundenacea with its rich orange and red leaves contrast with jewel toned magenta blooms of Primula Wanda.	Some of the winter garden beds and paths under canopy of giant fir trees.	Japanese Zigzag bridge - The zigzag bridge where, at certain times if you are very still and watchful, you may see a hummingbird bathing in the wide shallow basin on the top of the rock waterfall	Doris Page - woodland planting of fern, winter aconite and an evergreen form of epimedium.
Carpeting of Baby’s tears (Soleirolia soleirolii) with early spring planting - In a carpeting of baby tears there are the native white erythroniums and the yellow flowered hybrid Erythronium 'Pagoda', together with the white Anemone nemorosa (wood anemone) earlier the focal point were the jewel tones of primula wandas surrounded by white snowdrops and golden winter aconite.
